Hope for the Hurting
Group Study Guide
Author: David F. Cowdery
Availability: Available
You don't have to walk through your story alone — and now, neither does your group.
This is the companion study guide to David Cowdery’s memoir Hope for the Hurting: Finding Beauty from Trauma, built to help individuals and groups walk through the book’s twenty-two weeks of material one chapter at a time, in the order the story unfolds.
Each module follows the same steady rhythm: a chapter to read before the session, an opening thought connecting the chapter to Scripture, key passages to meditate on, discussion and reflection questions for the group, a personal reflection exercise, an optional “Going Deeper” section, and a closing prayer.
Because the book moves through real abuse, real rage, and real recovery, this guide is paced to match — with the heavier weeks flagged and grace built in for groups who need to slow down. Leaders can also download the free “Trauma-Aware Group Study Resource Kit” to help prepare for and lead these sessions well.
Whether you’re using this in a small group, a recovery ministry, or one-on-one with a trusted friend, this guide exists for one reason: to help David’s story open a door in yours.
"You won't be experiencing anything you haven't already experienced. The difference, though, is you won't be facing it alone. God will walk with you and help you along the way."
David F. Cowdery
If you've ever wondered whether your own story is
too broken, too shameful, or too far gone to be redeemed,
this book was written to touch your life with hope.
A note before you begin: Hope for the Hurting: Finding Beauty from Trauma contains honest, direct accounts of abuse and its aftermath. It was written to bring hope, but readers currently in crisis are encouraged to reach out for support first.
